Now that we have decided to buy simple, term life insurance, the goal is to “Get ‘R Done!”
Term life insurance is a cheap, nearly-commoditized offering that any life insurance firm can offer. But be aware that no life insurance agent makes much money selling you term life.
That’s ok, because you know what you want and you won’t be up-sold into something you don’t need.
If you have all your other insurance (home-owners, auto, etc.) with a single agent (as you should), check with them first to see if any additional discounts might be offered by adding term life.
If not, I would recommend finding an independent agent who can shop around on your behalf – especially if you are buying a sizeable amount or if you have health complications.
Independent agents can help you cut through the application process and identify providers that you might not otherwise reach. This can save you hundreds if not thousands of dollars over the lifetime of a contract.
But keep your antennae up. All insurance agents work on commission, which can create an adverse relationship. If at any time in the process you feel uncomfortable with the process or offering, ask questions persistently until you are satisfied moving forward.
Of course, if you are already working with a financial advisor, start there for the best recommendations and guidance.
